My dear friend Nikki received a Heart & Lung Transplant and you can't describe what it can do not only for the recipient but the family and friends of that person.
Sadly it was early days in the world of transplantation for Nikki, but it did give her back her life and extra time to do all the things she wanted to do the most.
Since then so much has changed with medical research the news for people receiving transplants is just getting better and better.
The only sad news is there is a serious and increasing shortage of organ donors in the UK. Last year over 400 people died whilst awaiting an organ transplant and there are currently over 6500 seriously ill people on the waiting list whose lives are dependent on the gift of organ donation.
It is essential that more people start thinking and talking about the issue. Only 22% of the population have currently signed the National Organ Donor Register, even though when questioned the majority of the population support the idea.
It is also equally important to inform your next of kin of your wishes to be an organ donor as the final decision will be theirs.
Please take the time to visit this site Live Life Then Give Life which has been created to raise awareness of Organ Donation and the chronic lack of Organ Donors in the UK.
Read the personal stories of all aspects of transplantation, from those awaiting transplant, those who have been lucky enough to receive the life changing operation, and the difficult decision after the death of a loved one.
Anybody can sign the NHS Organ Donor Register so please don't put it off go ahead and sign up today.
Don't forget even if you are on the register, your next of kin still have the right to override your wishes, but by signing up to the register then you have shown that you agree with organ donation which can make the decision so much easier for family and friends.
